Getting started with ubuntu
Ubuntu is in my opinion the best linux os availible.... this will be a guide of how to install ubuntu as well as some suggested software.
Re: Getting started with ubuntu
Download the ISO
go to the ubuntu download page and download ubuntu for your computer's architecture. this may take a while...
after this is completed you have two options... install inside of windows or burn a disk. I recommend burning a disk.

Installing inside of windows
I recommend burning a disk because when you install inside of windows you are limited to 30GB of space and unable to mount other partitions on your hard drive
but if you insist on doing it this way...
extract the iso using winRAR or some other extraction program and double-click wubi.exe the installation will begin and you will be able to follow the oncreen instructions to install... its pretty straight forward.... then just restart your computer and choose ubuntu from the windows boot loader, login and enjoy the wonderfulness that is ubuntu

From a disk
If you want to install from a disk you first have to burn the disk image... if you don't know how to do it check out my guide here. the next step is to boot from the disk. put the disk into the drive and restart your computer. during your BIOS startup (the part where it shows your computer brand) it should show two options, boot settings, and something along the lines of "change device boot order" (i believe on a dell its f12 and f9 on hp) it should give you a list of things like USB: CD/DVD-RW: HARD DISK:, choose your disk drive... after a while the ubuntu install menu will load and you can install ubuntu... if your computer has a decent amount of power i would recommend choosing try ubuntu and install from the demo desktop because since the process tends to be long you can surf the web or whatever while its going. once its done your computer will eject the disk, take the disk out, close the drive, press enter, and your computer will shut down. turn your computer back on and choose ubuntu from the GRUB screen and login
