Orange Box on Linux

Post by TheCollectiveUnconscious on Thu Mar 11, 2010 5:08 pm

so i recently found out that since like two versions ago on wine we are able to play games and use fairly sophisticated programs on wine... and it just keeps getting easier. So far i've installed the orange box and photoshop elements 4.0 which work just as well as in windows after changing some settings.

okay so the first step is to download wine. Don't be a fool download the latest release of Wine from the ubuntu synaptic package manager this will keep it simple. go to Applications -> Wine -> Configure Wine. change the wine emulation version to windows vista and check the desktop emulation checkbox. Set the desktop resolution to whatever you choose. I have mine set to 1024x768 so its at a decent res but lets me access my desktop still which is 1366x768.

now most stuff thats a single disk and doesn't use a stupid keygen dll (aoeIII) will install just fine... if you prefer just run the steam installer and download your games... or if you want to use the disks like me it gets a little more complicated Sad . mount your first disk (just put the disk in the disk drive). open a terminal and type the following commands "mkdir ~/Desktop/Orange_Files" then type in "cp /media/cdrom0/* ~/Desktop/Orange_Files/" this will take ~5 minutes (you won't see anything in the terminal just wait till it goes back to your normal command line). eject the disk insert disk2 and repeat ("cp /media/cdrom0/* ~/Desktop/Orange_Files/") when that is done eject your disk, open the Orange_Files folder on your desktop and run the setup.exe and install!

[EDIT]
okay just remembered a problem i had.... when you copy the files from the disk the files are set as Read-Only... this is a quick simple fix just select all of the files in the folder (Highlight or ctrl-a) then right click -> properties then choose the permissions tab and change all of the drop-down lists to "read and write". this will remove the little padlock icon as well as let the installer do its thing Smile

NOTE: If you started installing this before changing the permissions you must restart the installer AFTER changing permissions for it to work...

Do you have anything new that I don't have or tried, I like new programs? Also, am I the only one replying to this stuff?

i don't play TF2 but other people have it working... my laptop doesn't run games very well but thats probably because its a chipset and not an actual graphics card... i've just been messing with registry settings to get it working

Don't play TF2?
Only people who have never played TF2 don't play TF2.

Oh, you'd be surprised, TF2 is nothing like halo.

...

I'm not quite sure what to relate it to... Guess you'll just have to play it.

I liked it, but it does serve some resemblance to Halo.

I have heard about it, though last time I checked their site they wanted monies. Neutral

Though seeing as it's in the repo now I can only assume it's become free?

Though essentially I don't like having to run emulators (wine or otherwise), it eats up too much processing power and has a really buggy atmosphere about it, even if there are no bugs present.

its not an emulator... its just a front end that uses wine and has specially built installer packages... they have a list of supported programs
