How to install Songbird on Ubuntu

Okay first you need to download the tarball file:
32-Bit
64-Bit

- Right click the file and choose extract here... this should produce a directory (folder) called songbird

-copy the folder into this directory:
"/opt"
NOTE: since /opt is in the main file system you must be root in order to paste into there... so you must open up terminal and type in "sudo nautilus" and use the window that pops up to paste the folder into the /opt directory (in the left panel choose filesystem open up opt and paste)

-open up a terminal (Applications -> Accessories -> Terminal) and type this in (or copy and paste) w/o quotes of course
"sudo chmod 755 -R /opt/Songbird/songbird"

-change to the Songbird directory, type:
"cd /opt/Songbird/" (there is a space between cd and /)

-now type in:
"./songbird"

-songbird should now run, next we need to add it to your menu
NOTE: The task bar only accepts vector images, songbird gives you thier icon in PNG format so you have to convert it... if you don't know how to do that see this guide. I recommend putting your vector image in this folder: "/usr/share/icons/hicolor/scalable/apps"

- rightclick on the applications menu on your task bar and choose edit menus

-choose the sound & video category on the left side

- click new item on the right side

-under name type "SongBird", and under command type "/opt/Songbird/songbird", add your own description, and click the springboard picture to change the icon to your vector image. (if you saved it in the folder i mentioned above it will be in the folder that comes up right away)

-click close and then click close again

- songbird is now successfully been installed and added to your taskbar menu Very Happy

i stopped using songbird because it gets really buggy with large music collections... since mine is like 11,000+ songs the program crashes whenever i try and search for something
