Both mac and linux systems have a viruses count in the hundreds. To gain control over a Linux system or cause any serious consequence to the system itself, the malware would have to gain root access to the system. Not to mention that there are so many flavors of linux most are ineffective. All linux viruses actually have to be downloaded and executed. This means that you almost have to be intent on infecting your system. personally i'll take the 863 known linux viruses over the 1 million+ known windows viruses

Linux system only has as few viruses as you said have been indentified probably because of the sole factor of how immalleable the systems basic programming operations really are, I hope I should know since I own a Mac and a Linux.

good point the permissions system really helps out a lot too. windows actually did away with the permissions system to "improve functionality of applications" i think they tried to go back to permissions with vista but failed miserably... plus i really appreciate the rock solid unix foundations... unlike my windows that bluescreened while i was just trying to file my taxes...

Being an intern will be my first job, I'm still riding on medical school scholarships so I don't have to worry until then, but if your making under X amount of dollars just fill out the paper work for a X114 document or something like that and you'll get all of what you were paid back.
