Isn't it true that, humans, like every other creature, live solely based on natural instinct? If you're naturally inclined to help someone, believe something, or complete some task, is that not the same as any other creature? If "humans are different because they can reason" is it not the natural development of reason that adds to this?

i wouldn't say solely because we actually deny ourselves things that our instincts tell us to do. This is shown more in the people we think are "unstable" or it shown to an extreme in them too.

I think humans for the most part have achieved a pleasent medium.

well, seeing as instinct tells us that when we see a female ready to mate, we assert ourselves and give her a humping. But last time i checked, it isnt normal to see people humping in public... at least not yet.

and think about fasting. millions of ppl fast due to religious beliefs. our instinct tells us to eat as much as we can so we dont starve (hence the rising obesity rate)

Mainly, humans have souls. That is the main difference between us and everything else. When we die, we either go to heaven or hell. when Spot the dog dies, his body rots in the ground and thats the end of him.

Christians (TRUE Christians) have something extra to help guide their souls: the Holy Spirit. It helps us to make better decisions, kinda like a conscience boost.

Anyways, most people do what their instincts tell them to, but I don't understand why humans are the only thing we ever relate to instincts. Animals do this to survive in the wild, so......... mrgreen

I actually disagree because we do things because of mainly of our will, not usually instincts. Animals mainly do what thier instints tell them to do, not what thier will tells them to do.

I don't think MM means literally, "natural instinct" as in, eat, sleep, drink, mate, etc. I think he means more along the lines of our own personal character, and how each person lives according to how they have been made to act and think

Even if so, I still disagree, because people could change still.

But what if this change is just purely instinctual necessary for some greater purpose?

i suppose that everyone acts on a personal instinct, but then you get the really christian or memebers of religions that totally screw up that point. at least that is what i think.
